Single Mother: Lila Maya Tamang
Unlike some Nepali couples, Lila Maya Tamang married the love of her life. Happy in her choice, she and her husband decided to bring a little life into their lively world. Little Nisha became the centre of their relationship.
As a family, they lived happily in their village. However, when Nisha turned a young 3 years old, a tragedy tore down their world. Little Nisha’s father suddenly died. Scared of being alone, her mother Lila stayed with her husband’s family. However, eventually the burden of looking after Lila and her daughter Nisha was too much for his family and they cast her out.
Alone with little 6 year old Nisha, Lila made the long travel to the Bhaktapur district of KTM Valley. Although her brother was busy looking after his wife and son, he took Nisha and Lila into their home. Lila was tearfully thankful. However, this feeling of gratitude soon transformed back to fear; Lila knew they both could not stay long at her brother’s home as he was struggling financially as it was.
Desperately looking for a job so she could find her own home for little Nisha, but not wanting to keep her daughter from an education while searching, Lila pleaded to a local bamboo community school called Samata Niketan School. This is when we met Lila and her daughter Nisha, and decided to help.
